This is what millennial homes look like

Hello open and minimalist spaces! We tell you what millennial houses are like, the last generation that is emancipating itself.

“Those born in the generation of the eighties and nineties flow in flexible, versatile, ecological and comfortable interiors that allow them to move from one activity to another without major problems. Specialists in turning the inconvenience of sharing into a virtue.”

First of all, we have to highlight that the housing that young people access has a notable difference with respect to that of their parents: size. Low wages, high house prices make it difficult for millennials, and later generations, to access housing. In fact, Spain is, along with Italy, the country where young people leave home later, on average at 29 years of age. But, even though they can’t have a home, they can dream of it.

What are millennial homes like?

The “II Observatory of Housing in Spain”, the report published by Century21 Spain, explains that, in terms of the type of housing, 6 out of 10 opt for a flat in a building as the preferred option when it comes to emancipation. In terms of size, the young people believe that the first home should have an area of 75 square meters, three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Two-thirds of those interviewed want their first home when they leave to be in the same city where they usually live. As a house should be a place where you feel at peace, there should always be a corner where you go when you just want to disconnect. It should also be as simple as putting a rug on the floor, a low table and some cushions around it, and always plants.

According to Ricardo Sousa, CEO of the Century21 Spain network, “the real estate offer must take into account the conservative and traditional profile of today’s young people, their aspiration to own a home with their partner to start a family, and the inescapable clash with the reality marked by financial dependence. It will take another generation to see significant changes in demand for other solutions and other lifestyles.”

Breaking the mould

The millennial generation has broken with all the established schemes, in society, in fashion, and also in decoration. In the homes of this generation you can breathe a different air, technology is incorporated into domestic chores and real magic is made with the spaces. Traditionally, the living room was the heart of the house, where meetings were held and visitors were expected. That concept is broken, the kitchen is now the center of every house and that is why it must be given the importance it deserves. On the other hand, the bedroom is the second most important room for every millennial and therefore we must take into account the particularities in terms of decoration. The bed should be the main element, playing with textures to make it more appealing to the eye is always a good option. The minimalist style is the predominant style in these houses, the furniture the simpler and more functional.

As for lighting, it is necessary to take advantage of natural light as the feeling of spaciousness goes hand in hand. In fact, even if the apartment is small, it will always seem larger if it has natural light. It is important to keep the windows clear so that nothing gets in the way of the light passages in the rooms. The floor and walls, clear, smooth, medium-sized and preferably glossy; In the case of walls and ceilings, the color white is a safe bet, as it increases the feeling of space. Combine soft and light tones, as they give a lot of light and spaciousness and are also easy to combine. If you choose this option, you may need to unify your floors and décor, but it’s worth the investment.

And if you are lucky enough to have a small outdoor space, such as a patio or terrace. That’s where everything is bet on the explosion of color, and plants are an element that cannot be missing.
