The Egg chair was born at the end of the 50s. It arose from the idea of creating something new and different from a single piece. From a seat with a backrest and armrests joined together came the Egg chair.
As the name of the egg chair indicates, there is no need to explain the reason for the name. A chair that was consolidated in the 50s and 60s throughout Europe. Currently it is a trend again, it is no longer only designed as indoor furniture, we can see them outdoors, terraces and hanging.
Unique and exclusive design
Arne Jacobsen is its designer, he created the chair in 1958 for the Radisson Hotel in Copenhagen.
As a good sculptor, Arne Jacobsen first sculpted the chair in clay and was able to perfect its shape until its final design. The first Egg chairs were manufactured by the Republic of Fritz Hansen Company.
The first concept of this chair was intended for opulent and ornate environments. The first ones were of large size, perfectly made with top quality leather covers, resistant and very elegant.
Its original aesthetics and great comfort made the chair a trend at the time. Most were created exclusively for the hotel, but thanks to their impact, some special edition ones were made, costing up to $60,000 each.
In 2008, the Frinz Hansen Company manufactured 999 more chairs for a limited edition to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Egg chair. These new chairs were made of suede with leather and combined two tones creating a special appeal.
In order not to lose its classic touch, the bronze base was maintained and all of them polished by hand.
In addition, to confirm its authenticity, each chair was numbered under the cushion along with a text written with the history of the Egg chair. An exclusive Arne Jacobsen and limited edition chair.
Today’s Inspiration
Of the original chairs from the 50s and 60s, there are so few, those that are still maintained are few and exclusive and almost all belong to collectors.
The appeal of this chair remains its unique and distinctive style, which is why it is a piece that has inspired the line of new furniture collections.
The Egg armchair is a classic in the world of design. With its visual and delicate shapes, the Egg chair by Arne Jacobsen combines design, comfort and functionality in any environment.
This year it has already turned 60 years old and is still one of the most exclusive chairs. It is still manufactured and upholstered as it was done then, about 1100 stitches by hand, that care and art in its manufacture make it continue to be our object of desire.
We like the Egg chair for the privacy it provides and how it surrounds us, it is one of the features that most attract interior designers. As we have seen, there are very few examples of the original one, but currently the Fritz Hansen firm has the rights to exploit its design, producing it and also marketing it.
And if you like it and it is not enough for the original model today on the market you can find hundreds of replicas to also enjoy it in your home. We show you our latest project, we have designed a space in which we were looking for an intimate and personal atmosphere and thanks to the Egg chair we have achieved that space.
