The countdown to the arrival of autumn has begun. The calendar tells us that in just over two weeks we will be able to start enjoying cooler temperatures and dust off our jackets, scarves and boots, preparing for the fall of the leaves and the cozy afternoons of blanket and sofa. The time has come for a wardrobe change, a moment loved and hated in equal parts. The lack of space at home or the disorganization when it comes to distributing our clothes and accessories can produce a logistical crisis that can be solved by planning in detail the construction of our ideal dressing room. That’s why we wanted to share a series of tips that can help you even if you don’t have a large enough space to have the dressing room of your dreams. The dressing room is a fundamental piece in decoration, but it is not always given the importance it deserves. Making good use of the space dedicated to this area, and storing and organizing clothes and accessories, is the secret to not invading other areas of the house. If you have a large enough space, you will also have the opportunity to dress and undress right there. Remember to incorporate objects such as a large mirror, a coat rack and an armchair or shoe remover. Don’t forget to install good lighting that will allow you to make the best decisions when choosing your clothes.

Distribute according to your needs

The place where you store your personal garments has to be designed according to your lifestyle and also the size of your house. Its shape and arrangement can be determined by taking into account these two premises.

In spacious rectangular or square rooms, arrange the walk-in closet parallel to the larger wall or in an L-shape, taking advantage of an angle on the wall. You can also create a large U-shaped dressing room by making the most of the perimeter of the room and placing a central island with additional storage areas. In these cases, the dressing room can be integrated into the bedroom, being another room in the house or even forming a set with the main bathroom. You can separate the dressing room from the room with an open wall or a piece of furniture at half height. This in turn can function as a headboard of the bed. The option of using doors or leaving it open is more personal and must be worked on depending on each place and the decorative style.

In small spaces, place the cabinets in a line. Opt for the walk-in closet option with doors and paint them in the same tone as the wall. These integrated cabinets look lighter and visually expand the space. You can also use sliding doors. Study your wardrobe and organize your dressing room according to your style. If you regularly wear formal wear, you’ll need more space to hang your clothes; while if your style is more informal, reserve a greater number of storage areas to fold and distribute your clothes, such as drawers and shelves.

Divide the height of your dressing room into three levels and reserve the top for the off-season area or the area you use very occasionally. The middle level will be for regular clothes and the lower level for shoes and drawers. To give you an idea, we indicate the approximate space that you should reserve for each type of clothing: Short garments. If you hang your shirts you will need a gap between 60 and 75 cm. high and a space of 2 cm. between hangers and hangers to prevent them from wrinkling. Long suits. Dresses and coats need a free area between 1.20 and 1.50 cm. high, and pants approximately 90 cm. Don’t forget in this case to calculate that each garment will need a gap of about 4 cm. It is important that the clothes have enough space and do not rub against each other. Shirts and sweaters: It is best to store them stacked on removable shelves placed about 30 cm apart. Accessories: You can place them in drawers or pull-out trays. Footwear: On shelves about 40 cm. high and separated from the rest of the garments.

In any case, order and an intelligent distribution will be what will give you the key to achieving your ideal dressing room. Avoid overloading the storage area, do not overfill the drawers and group garments that have the same use. Protect the footwear from deformation and, above all, plan. These tips will allow you to have everything at hand and classified to enjoy your clothes and that your bedroom does not get lost in the chaos that your clothes can generate.
