Instagram adores him, on Pinterest there is no deco profile that has not pinned him, there are replicas, inspirations and copies everywhere. It is a true icon of decoration that has overcome the barriers of time and has sneaked into one of the design trends that currently trap us, the Nordic style. The Adnet Mirror, with its timeless, simple and adaptable design is part of our deco imaginary. We have seen it in bedrooms, living rooms and bathrooms, it adapts to any place without losing an iota of prominence and becoming the center of attention.
The Adnet mirror has a structure formed by a circular mirror that is covered with a very resistant Italian leather strap and brass buckles. It is made proportionally to the size of the mirror. Since 2011 it has been manufactured and distributed by the Danish firm Gubi and is available in three sizes (45, 58 and 70 cm in diameter) and in two colors (brown and black). The most original of its design are the leather straps, which are sewn by hand to the structure and are used to hang it on the wall. They can be adjusted in height by means of bronze buckles reminiscent of the straps used in horseback riding. Another particularity of leather strips is that their length is directly proportional to the diameter of the mirror so, regardless of the dimensions of the mirror, the visual effect on the wall is practically always the same.
This mirror is a design by the French architect and interior designer, Jacques Adnet (1900 – 1984), a benchmark of Art Deco thanks to his modernist and avant-garde designs. Adnet studied art at the “Ecole des Arts Décoratifs” in Paris. At the end of 1920 he directed the French decoration firm Sue et Mare and later created, together with his brother Jean, the company that bore his name JJ Adnet. By 1925 he was already known as one of the most promising designers for his innovative creations and for being the first to combine metal, glass and leather in the structure and decoration of his furniture. In 1950 the French fashion firm Hermès invited him to collaborate with them, attracted by their avant-garde creations. For them he devised a collection of furniture and accessories in which Florentine leather, the emblem of the brand, was the protagonist. Among all the objects created was the Adnet circular mirror that we wanted to present to you today in our blog.
